Sunday we had to do a bunch of running around and ended up down near the ferry terminal at the big mall. After getting everything done we still had a few hours of daylight and the rain had mercifully stopped. So we decide to head down to Boundary Bay to see what might be around on this early winter afternoon. We ended up with a pretty great day, with lots of owls and raptors to entertain!

This post is a bit of a catch up. There’s been lots going on over the last month or so with no downtime to write it all down or post. We’ve been doing lots around the city, I took a week off from work to head over to Galiano to catch up on some projects and as part of that trip was able to swing by Victoria for a day and a half to catch up with some friends. It’s been busy but fun!

It’s been a while since I posted much - getting through the Europe posts and getting through the over 3,000 photos I took on my proper camera in Europe has taken a lot of time. This will be a shortish, photo-heavy post of a recent trip to Reifel. We got very lucky with birds of prey on this trip - eagles, hawks and an owl! We also made a short stop at the farm on Westham Island, which was all decked out for Halloween.

We had to part ways with Michael and Maureen today, so we dropped them at the airport and spent the day exploring south of Lisbon. We decide to head to Setubal, and while the town ended up being a bit underwhelming, we still had a nice day. And saw flamingos! Then it was on to Lisbon for half a day of sightseeing!

Through the end of August and the first weekend of September, we were spending our longest stretch so far this year on Galiano. While we were working during the week, we had two full weekends, including the long weekend to enjoy island time. On the long weekend we were doing our annual Panorama Lane Party with all the neighbors! And with Dana and Bradley hosting, it was guaranteed to be an event!

Last post! This collects the rest of my photos from our time on Mount Rainier. This included some great shots at Christine Falls, our hike around Reflection Lakes and some last bird, wildflower and waterfalls pictures. It was a great trip, and I hope you’ve enjoyed all the photos!

Continuing with the photocentric posts, this one covers the rest fo our time in Hood River, including lots of bird photos, photos of people on the river, the local scenery and lots of pics of the mountains. Again, very little commentary in this post.

I’m trying something new - a separate post that’s mainly just the photos I took with my camera, rather than my phone. So there will be some that are similar to what was in the related main post, but there will be some new things as well. There will likely be less textual content to go with it, but let’s see how this goes.

In the summer, we like to spend as much time on Galiano as we can. With the addition of StarLink we’ve been able to work from the cottage, which has meant that we can also stay for longer stretches. This trip was two full weekends, bookended around the week of work. It meant we were able to tackle a few projects and also that we were lucky enough to catch up with some friends that came to visit Galiano.

It’s been a while since I posted an update - it’s been a busy stretch. I had a quick trip back to Ontario to visit with both of my families (after my work trip to Florida), and then we had a nice stretch on Galiano. There was a weekend in Squamish mountain biking squeezed in there as well. Lots of fun!
Read MoreThe Caterpillar Apocalypse - and Lots of Birds!
We spent a full week on Galiano with big plans to tackle lots of projects around the property. That came to a crashing halt as we discovered how bad the tent caterpillar apocalypse had become. I’ll share some of the details, an update on how the gardens are doing and because it’s migration and nesting season, lots of birds!

The weekend before my birthday, the Vancouver Whitecaps were playing an away game in Portland. We’ve gone to these games a number of times over the years (this was my 4th) and so we decide to take a couple of days off and make a 4-day weekend out of it. The game was great, we had some fun in Portland, got out to our favorite winery, and took the long way home along the coast. Our friend Stuart came down for the game as well, and we had a great weekend!

On Friday night I had bought us tickets to Whiskey and Words, a fundraising event for the Vancouver Writers Fest, before heading to Galiano on Saturday morning for a long overdue trip. We stayed through Tuesday night getting lots of projects done around the cottage, before heading home to spring finally arriving. Wednesday night we went for a nice walk and had an amazing sunset.

Kedar, one of the world’s most amazing people, offered to use his day off to do another little tour in Pune. We started with some birding at a bird sanctuary, followed by a stop at the Aga Khan Palace where Gandhi was held prisoner, a stop at some local caves - all in a very packed last day in Pune.

One morning on the first week of my stay I was up early again and decide to hike up the hill on the west side of the valley. I was told there was an old rock quarry up there and I thought I’d have a look. Plus you know, birds. It was all going so well until I got to the end of the trail, and then things got complicated…

At the end of February, Justine, Mom and I went to Maui for a week. As you can imagine, I took a lot of pictures (and video this time, so itis going to take a while to get through it all. I’ll try and post updates in smaller batches, but I thought it might be fun to do a quick photo-based summary of the whole trip. I’m sure I’ll miss a bunch of cool stuff, but that’s why you’ll have to come back for the full posts!

Friday was another busy day for us! We started on the beach, headed down to a wildlife sanctuary for some birding and then headed out to the surfing hotspot of Hookipa on the north side of Maui to see the turtles and watch the surfers, windsurfers and kite boarders out on the ocean. We had a late lunch at the Paia Flatbread Company, made a stop at the sunflower fields before heading back to Kapalua to have dinner with Rob and his family. A busy, fun day!

Our plan after returning from Ontario was to spend a few days recharging on Galiano before jumping back into work for the New Year. One of the neighbors on the Lane were hosting a New Year’s Eve party, and we had lots of work to tackle on the property. But we also wanted to carve out some time to relax and explore.
