Friday, Justine and I played hooky from work and took the day off to head up to Whistler for what we expect will be our last day of skiing for the season. As it turned out, it was a spectacular, bluebird day on the mountain and made for a great final day out.
We had started out early that morning to try and beat any crowds heading up for what was to be the last weekend that the Whistler portion of the mountain was going to be open for the season (Blackcomb will stay open until May long weekend). We didn’t need to worry about it, as the mountain was actually pretty empty and may runs we had the whole thing to ourselves, which was amazing.
There hadn’t been any new snow, so we had to accept that it was going to be a groomer day. That was OK - the weather was perfect, there were no crowds and it meant lots of fast runs!
We had a great morning. The sun was shining and the slopes were fast! We burned up and down with almost no lift lines, churning through more runs in the morning than our whole previous day on the mountain.
Later in the morning we ended up skiing both Harmony and Symphony and really covered a lot of ground. The views looking out over the mountains from Harmony were particularly nice.
Around lunch time we skied down into the Village for lunch at Dublin Gate, one of our favourite pubs at Whistler. It has been a long time since we’ve been there, and it was way overdue. The sun was bright and it was w arm in the Village - it was almost hard to get up from the patio and get back to the slopes. But we did.
For the afternoon, we started on Blackcomb - which we rarely ski - and did a couple of runs before taking the Peak2Peak Gondola back over to Whistler Mountain. We were lagging at that point, so we did a few more runs before calling it a day. We ended up doing 11 runs in the morning and another 5 in the afternoon - a big day for us!
