Our weekends in the city tend to get fille dup pretty quickly as we like to maximize our time and take advantage of all the things that the city has to offer. Case in point on Saturday, we had a festival in Tsawwassen in the new Southlands neighborhood where one of my all time favorite bands, 54-40 was the headlining act! We also got to catch up with our friends Tom and Tracy that live in the area, making for an excellent day!
54-40 were scheduled t take the stage around 7:30, so we didn’t need to be down at the festival grounds too early. Our friends Tom (my former boss) and Tracy, his wife live in Tsawwassen about a 10 minute walk from the festival. They were kind enough to let us park in their driveway which addressed the major issue of parking. We arrived mid afternoon and hung out with them on their amazing aptio for a couple of hours. It gave us a good chance to catch up, as it had been a while.
The entrance to the festival area.
This was the first time this particular festival was done. Barns to Beaches is a new bike route which spans 16 km from Tsawwassen to Ladner along the shoreline, dike and backcountry farm roads. The City of Delta launched the new route with a bike ride (which we could not get into as it was sold out) and the festival. And with 54-40 playing, it seemed like a great event to attend.
The Southlands is a new area in Tsawwassen that is being built out as a complete new community. Four Winds Brewery built an amazing new restaurant (which we have been to a couple of times), as well as some interesting stores, community gardens and event centers. It’s really quite nice.
We left Tom’s place maybe 5ish, and the four of s walked over to the event site. Tom had his kids visiting and they were at the brewpub, so we went our separate ways and we headed into the concert. There were other bands on before 54-40 was scheduled, as well as food trucks, drinks and a small market with some vendors.
We explored the vendors, had a drink and grabbed some food. The couple of hours passed pretty quickly and soon the band was on. Most of the guys in 54-40 actually grew up and went to high school in Tsawwassen, so this was something of a homecoming. They put on an amazing show (as always), mixing in the new album and all the hits. It was a fun show and a great day!
