This is going to be a short post covering a couple of things over the past few weeks. I am working on a larger post on my trip to Las Vegas and CES (the Consumer Electronics Show), which I hope to get up shortly. In the meantime, we had a fun night out at Harry Potter at the Symphony and this past weeked on Galiano we had a bit of an inversion, which offered up some incredible views.
The Vancouver Symphony puts on a series of events where they play a popular movie and the Symphony performs the score while the movie plays. Justine went to one just before Christmas and loved it. I had not been, but had heard good things from friends that had been, so was excited to go. They perform at the Orpheum, which is a beautiful old theatre.
It was a busy night with a crowd that was clearly into the Harry Potter scene. Lots of people dressed up and the setting suited the evening.
Alex and Matt happened to have tickets to the show as well (we figured out that we had each bought tickets independently at some point before Christmas), so we were able to catch up a little bit before the show and during the intermission.
The show was great - the only issue was that sometimes you got distracted, trying to decide to pay attention to the movie or the orchestra! It was really cool to watch them play and to try and follow the various instruments as the score progressed during the film. Sometimes it was obvious, but other times it was really hard to figure out the instruments.
It’s a great movie and the live music certainly added to the atmosphere for the show. I’m really glad we went - it was a super fun night, especially seeing all the people dressed up and really into it!
The following weekend we spent at the island, and we were lucky enough to have a clear and sunny stretch of days - at least for us sitting up high on the ridge. For everyone sitting closer to sea level, they were socked in as we had a bit of an inversion for the whole weekend!
With the inversion, we were sitting above the clouds. It looked like a layer of cotton candy as far as the eye could see.
The sunny weather was a welcome change, and it let us get a lot done over the weekend. I got the chainsaw out and finally cut up all the trees we had taken down clearing up a stretch of forest last fall; we pruned the fruit trees back, so that hopefully we can keep them at a reasonable size; and we got the wood chipper fired up and cleaned up the piles of branches that we had pulled out of the forest over the winter. Justine also did a lot of broome clearing, which we need to keep working on. We made some great progress and didn’t overdue it too much.
Here’s a few more cool inversion photos:
Not the most interesting of posts, but hopefully I can get some others up before too long!
