This is a bit of a catch up post, but we had a last trip to Galiano before heading back to Ontario for Christmas. We wanted to make sure we were keeping up with the projects on the island, and had one short weekend to fit in a few things.
We only had a few days on the island and we were socked in with low lying clouds and a bit of rain. We try not to let that affect us, but it does put a damper on things. It meant lots of fires in the fireplace to keep us toasty warm, and time inside playing games rather than working all the time. That said, we did get some broome cutting in while we were there.
Saturday we spent a bunch of time just wandering the property and sorting out many little tasks. It wasn’t an overly productive day, but that’s OK. We eventually headed back inside to the warmth of the fire and played a round of our new board game (well new to us) Ticket to Ride. It’s some deluxe version that we picked up at Costco, and after figuring out the basics we had a fun game before dinner!
We played a game and a half before needing to break to head for dinner. We had booked a table at Lola’s at Bodega Ridge, as a bit of a farewell to 2023. It’s such a great restaurant, and it would be a while before we’d be back. We had all the usual favorites (pomelo salad, fried chicken) and tried a few new things as well.
Sunday we figured we needed to be a bit more energetic. After sleeping in a bit, we headed out into the rain and went out for a walk. We did a short hike around the local trails. There were no views to be had as we were still sitting in the clouds, but we got a bit of exercise and enjoyed the day.
After lunch, we headed back out to get some work done - it was time for broome clearing. We had a pretty good stretch, cutting for a few hours and making some good progress. This section we’re into know is all the really old, big plants. Some are more than 10 feet tall and 3-4 inches in diameter at the base. It’s slow going, but you clear a decent sized area. I had bought a new hand held chainsaw that has turned out to be perfect for the big stuff.
