Canada Day Birds

The last post was starting to get a bit too long, so I thought I better cut it off at the end of the day on Saturna. After getting home we spent the rest of the day just relaxing, and managed to get quite a few good photos of the birds around the property. The rest of the photos are randomly from the next few days. This post might not be for everyone, but consider yourself warned!

It was a perfect evenign to hang out on the new deck!

I pigeon guillemot from the boat on the way home.

I believe this is Western Flycatcher. There’s been a few of them around the property, and they seem to like the cages on the shrubs.

The orange-crowned warblers are usually in the trees, but this year we’ve seen them in the foxglove quite a bit.

It’s interesting to watch them bick insects out of the flowers. This one is a juvenile, and it’s colouring is not as bright.

Generally speaking, this year has been a bit quiet on the whale watching front. I don’t normally post photos, as they are usually quite bad, given the distance. This one is not very good either, but you can see all the whale watching boats, plus one blow spout, so I figured it was worth posting.

It’s not really the season for it, but there are some big mushrooms popping up near the edge of the forest.

It’s not the shot I’ve been envisioning, but it’s close. I’ve been trying to get hummingbirds at the foxgloves for years… so close!

I don’t understand why it’s not in the flower!

It’s not the best photo, as the light was starting to fade, but I think this is an olive-sided flycatcher.

Since it can’t just be birds, we had the sunset bring some lovely colours.

The next morning, more deer. I left to go play golf and they barely acknowledged my existence.

Violet-green swallow.

Purple finch.

Townsend’s warbler. The light was not great, and neither is the photo!

Hairy woodpecker.

And his big cousin, the pileated woodpecker.

I thin kit’s a juvenile rufous, but it seems very green. Might be an Anna’s.

Flycatcher in the thistles.

As always, I take more photos than I think anyone wants to see. Even paring it down to the “good” ones, there are lots more. So I’ve thrown them into this gallery - feel free to browse!
