The post from the end of September of our trip to New York City was mostly photos taken with my iPhone, supplemented with some photos from Justine. Ater a fair bit of travelling, I had some time to look through the photos I took with my better camera, and so have added this post of photos with captions.
Chelsea and Environs
The Chelsea Hotel made a couple of appearances over the course of our visit. I really enjoyed the lobby bar.
A random Canadian bar - it was closed when we wandered by.
It wouldn’t be a trip to New York without a visit to Chelsea Market.
The insides were all lit up as usual.
Another one of our regular stops.
While we didn’t go into Macy’s, the iconic facade is stipp worth a look.
Hudson Yards and the Vessel
The highest observation deck in the western hemisphere.
It’s kind of crazy to think of that glass floor from that high up. Still, not sure it’s worth $40 a person.
Some details from one of the neighboring buildings.
Just playing around…
The Vessel is an interesting art piece/tourist attraction.
The park surrounding the Vessel is quite nice itself.
As it was closed, we still have not been up the Vessel, but this time we at least got to see inside it.
I needed a slightly different lense to get the straight up view right.
I just love the reflective brass surface - so many interesting reflections to play with.
Look who’s posing again!
A Walk Along the High Line
We always start the High Line at the north entrance. You’d never know it was NYC.
Looking back at the huge buildings in Hudson Yards.
From this angle, you can see the train yards that the new development was built on top of.
Some cool views of the local landmarks.
The Vessel at Hudson Yards.
Despite being dwarfed by the buildings, the unique look of the Vessel still stands out.
Our cool little bug.
One of the many places they incorporated the old rail lines into the new path.
One of the many incredible design elements that make the park so special.
The High Line wraps around Hudson Yards to a degree, giving you views from many different angles.
Heading into the busy section.
Lost in the crowd.
One of the really pretty stretches where even at the end of the summer, the plants envelope you.
A few last flowers of summer.
Heading into my favourite part of the park.
Trying to figure out what birds are still around.
Looking back to the observation platform.
Great views of the Empire State Building.
At the south end, the birth trees and grasses make it appear overgrown and abandoned.
The birch trees are my favs -but I can never get a photo that does them justice.
Little Island
ONe of our new favorite places to visit in New York - Little Island!
A couple of photos from the High Line, looking over to Little Island.
You can see the structures used to float the new park over the river.
The entrance gives you a great view of the very unique park.
From just off the bridge entrance you can really see the supporting structures.
On the inside, there are lots of different elevation changes to give you many different perspectives.
Views south to the World Trade Center.
And down to the Statue of Liberty.
The middle of the park is a great open space for relaxing, with a bite to eat and a beverage.
All along the river you see the remains of the original piers.
The amphitheater. Sadly, no performances that day.
Throughout the park there were interesting planters holding lots of cool plants.
Random Stuff
Cool subway sculptures.
The building across from our hotel had an amazing facade, with all sorts of decorative elements.
It’s one of the few in the city that used these tiles on the facade.
Central Park
I love the ever-changing view of the Manhattan skyline.
Boats out on the lake.
This building is amazing - you can see through the floors they’ve left open to let the wind pass through.
People are feeding the turtles, so they come to check you out.
The tallest, skinniest building on the skyline.
It was warm, so many turtles were out of the water.
Plane trees; they remind me of France.
This is easily the biggest burl I’ve ever seen!
Trees are amazing - this one has grown across the rocks.
Looking down onto the famous fountain and plaza. It’s in so many movies and TV shows.
A slightly closer view, at the north end of the park.
World Trade Center and 9/11 Memorial
A couple of views of the new World Trade Center.
PLaying with perspective.
From inside the fancy underground mall.
It is quite amazing to look at.
We had a beautiful day with some great clouds to reflect in the building.
The Memorial is a very special place.
From the bar, some great views of the Statue of Liberty.
Ellis Island.
The HMS Elizabeth Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier.
