The second post of… not sure how many it will be. I think that first one went OK - it’s a different way of organizing some of the many photos we take.
This time I thought I’d pull together all the interesting pictures of birds and beasts and other critters we’ve seen about over the past few months. It definitely has slowed, especially for the birds. I’m sure they’re still about, but now that mating season has passed, it’s a lot more quiet at 5:00 a.m.
Late June - Swainson's Thrush
This was a “new” bird for us this year. While I’m sure it was there before, we were able to identify it this year.
Late June - Swainson's Thrush
This bird has a really nice call, and throughout the end of June it was in full display. Frequently there would be two calling to each other, one from our property and one from the neighbor’s. It was magical.
Late June - Swainson's Thrush
Sadly, as June turned to July, the frequency of the calls abated, as did the sight of them. I assume they were off caring for little ones.
Late June - Metal Bird
Our metal bird pileated woodpecker is developing a lovely patina.
Late June - Flycatcher
We do see quite a number fo different flycatcher species about. I’m not sure what this one is, but he was about all weekend.
Late June - White-crowned Sparrow
The white-crowns are a fixture almost all year. Their song ins lovely, and they make good use of the broom.
Late June - White-crowned Sparrow
We think that they raised two broods of chicks this year. Twice, we had fledglings working over the front ‘yard”, looking for seeds and insects and learning how to fly.
Early July - butterflies
I am not not good with identifying butterflies, but there have been lots of different ones around.
Early August - Deer (mageddon)
Everything we do around the property is about protecting the things we plant from the deer. We have planted many bushes, trees and flowers that are supposed to bee “deer resistant”. There’s no such thing. (This one was on the golf course - I don’t mind seeing them there).
Early August - Deer (mageddon)
And even when we’ve fenced things off, it has not deterred them. They devestarted a maple we planted, as we did not do a good enough job protecting it. We lost all our raspberries, as they pushed through the fence and bent over a metal pole. It’s never ending war!
Early August - Deer (mageddon)
Yes they are cute - especially the little ones. This time of year, we’re seeing lots of fawns - twins (oh joy).
