Galiano Day Trip and a Snowy Vancouver Day

It’s been a slow start to the year, and I have not had a lot to share thus far. Hopefully that will change soon. In the meantime I have two small, separate posts that I will combine into one to save us all some time.

A couple of weekends back, Justine and I headed over to Galiano for a quick day trip. There were a couple of things we needed to look after, but generally it was supposed to be a fun, relaxing day. The first thing we did on arrival was to drive out to a new park that had recently been added near our property. At the bottom of our lot we back onto a road that goes out to a dead end/locked gate. Beyond it the road heads up to Dionisio Park. Close to the dead end, they recently started selling off some new lots, and one of the conditions was they they build a new park. It’s recently been opened, so we wanted to check it out.

The trail down to the water winds through a very mossy section of forest.

The trail is quite short and winds down fairly steeply through the mossy forest. it’s a short, pleasant walk down to the water, and a sandstone beach. It’s a really nice spot with a bit of a different view. They have done a nice job with a couple of picnic tables and a nice flat, open area. I think we will head back to enjoy it many times to come! I also used the walk to play with our drone a bit. I’m going to need it soon, and need practice flying it. Crashing it into a tree was not a good start.

Our short hike down to the new beach.

After our short hike, we went back up to the property and got a few chores done. Nothing exciting that deserves any real description at this point. Before heading back for the ferry, we decided to do a short walk at Laughlin Lake. Laughlin Lake is the largest body of freshwater on the island, and despite being quite close to us, we don’t go down there very often. In this case, it was very flooded with all the rain, but we were still able to walk around a little bit. There were some fun things to see.

After our short walk, it was back to the south end and the ferry terminal to head home. It wa a nice break from the monotony of home, and we got a few things done.

Sturdies Bay Ferry Terminal. The light was nice… ;-)

On February 13th, karma bit me. Not a few days before I made the mistake of mentioning that it seemed like we were going to get through winter without any snow - wrong! It wasn’t a lot, but it certainly was enough to stick around for a few days.

Damn - I thought we’d escaped winter…

Since we don’t get snow all that often, Justine and i headed out for a walk to enjoy the change of scenery. There’s not a lot to say, but I’ll add some photos from the snowy day.

Just to add a bit of a random one - I’ve added some pics of the “new” Vancouver House on the other side of False Creek. This is one of the newest buildings on the skyline, and one of the coolest buildings in the city. We’ve had a front row view of the construction over the past few years, and it certain adds to our view from our rooftop. Despite being around for a few years now, until I started doing a lot of walking in these COVID times, I had not been over to see it from below. It’s as cool from up close as it is from our place.
