It’s been a very busy fall for Justine and I, so there hasn’t been a lot of activities to report on, and we haven’t spent as much time on Galiano as we have throughout the year. Plus the weather has been awful - 150 mm of rain in September, triple our normal amount. Don’t get me wrong - we needed it, but it didn’t lead to many adventures or photos to share. To wrap up the last month or so, I thought I’d pull together a few random photos into one “catch-up” post.
Some Truck Pics
At the end of the summer we got our new truck, which has been amazing. We so needed it, and it has made going over to the island so much easier. We’re always bringing stuff back and forth, and the truck just makes it so much easier. Plus it’s really amazing how much the technologies in vehicles have advanced in 10 years - it just makes the whole experience so much nicer, and ours isn’t particularly advanced! Here’s a few photos from our first couple of days with the truck.
On one of the weekends that we stayed in the city, we had a very nice couple of days, and so decided to do a biking brewery tour. It had been ages since we did one, and with COVID all of the breweries had really stepped up their game on outdoor patios. Our friend Stuart joined us for a few of them, and I think we managed to hit four or five of them. Sadly Justine’s 1960’s cruiser bike broke on the way home, which put a bit of a damper on our evening.
Vancouver 7s
The last true event that we attended, back in February of 2020 (seems like a very long time ago) was the Vancouver 7s Rugby Sevens tournament. We’ve been to this event almost every year, but with events being shut down during COVID, the February 2021 event got delayed.
It was eventually rescheduled for September, and they were lucky enough that our recovery efforts had got us into “Phase III”, and were able to run the event at 50% capacity. It wasn’t the same - usually the place is way more than 50% sold, and not all the teams were able to come, due to restrictions in their home countries. So no Australia or New Zealand or Fiji. And without Fiji, well, the true die hard fans were missing. Still it seemed fitting that our first event back would be Vancouver 7s, even if it wasn’t the same.
One thing that was a bit different that was really good, was that they mixed the mens and womens tournaments together. Normally, the women’s event is separate, at a different time and on Vancouver Island. I liked this format.
As it turned out, on the men’s side we ended up with an all African final - South Africa versus Kenya, with South Africa (not surprisingly) coming out on top. They were the class of the event. Canada ended up placing 5th I think - a very respectable showing.
